
The production that Gockley oversaw in 1976 as general director of Houston Grand Opera was decisive in changing perceptions of George Gershwin's work. "Porgy and Bess," which comes to PBS on Friday in the San Francisco Opera's vivacious 2009 production, probably tops that list. When San Francisco Opera general director David Gockley retires from operatic life in a couple of years, one of the many facets of his legacy will be his record of championing works that teeter on the stylistic line between opera and popular music.
